Doors & Transitions – Fused Glass Images

Erna Piechna-Sowersby / Switzerland

Doors tell stories: of transitions, thresholds, encounters and new spaces.

The starting point for this course is the series “Passages”, created by Erna Piechna-Sowersby for her 2024 exhibition at the Vitromusée in Romont. The series consists of 16 window pictures in a 24 × 24 cm format, presented in specially made plexiglass holders.

This format also forms the basis for the work in the course.

The glass pictures are constructed from three layers of 3 mm glass. The individual elements are designed in several firings and then fused together to create a complete image.

During the course you will:

  • design a glass picture in the format 24 × 24 cm

  • work with layered glass compositions

  • explore surface and depth through multiple firings

  • experiment with different glass materials and decorative elements

Participants are free to design their own motif. Those inspired by the door series may also use one of the existing templates as a starting point.

Materials used include sheet glass, glass frits, powders, metal foils, wires and Colorline paints. Depending on the chosen technique, a sandblaster may also be used.

The finished glass picture is especially effective in daylight – displayed in a window or on a light-coloured wall.

Who is it for?
This course is ideal for participants who enjoy working freely and experimentally and who would like to develop their own artistic approach in glass.

Throughout the course, participants will receive individual guidance and support from Erna Piechna-Sowersby. The result will be a unique glass artwork with the personal signature of its creator.

Skill level:
Kiln forming skills are advantageous.
